Dunsborough Primary School has hosted a themed dress day to raise funds for an orphanage in Bali.
Students were encouraged to dress up in their very best Bali outfit for a gold coin donation, with all funds being raised going directly to the Jodi O’Shea orphanage.
The orphanage was built in the loving memory of Jodie O’Shea after her tragic death in the Bali bombings in 2002.
The orphanage now hosts 86 children in their care, with their aspiration to create a loving family environment for all.
The school selected the orphanage to be the benefactor of their fundraising because of the amazing work it had done, but also because the lives of those in Bali will resonate with students as it is a popular holiday spot for local families.
“We want their visits to have a greater social impact,” Dunsborough Primary School’s Sustainability Committee leader Helena Nicholson said.
“The orphanage has a great name for itself and we look towards increasing the school’s social handprint.”
The open door policy of the orphanage where students can meet the children who are being directly impacted by their fundraising was also a strong drawcard for the school, with two students Olivia Minty and Kai Robinson, along with their families visiting and experiencing the impact of their efforts first hand.
Olivia Minty in particular fundraised outside of the school for the orphanage.
The day’s efforts saw $951 being raised to send over to help the children.
“When students visit a place like the orphanage they realise how fortunate they are,” School chaplain Rae Witham said.
