Melbourne has been named the best city in Australia to study in and second best in the world, ahead of London, New York and Hong Kong.
Paris topped the list as the world's best student city for the third year running, according to the 2015 QS Best Student Cities list.
The ratings, which measure cities on their universities, affordability, lifestyle, employment prospects and student community, are compiled by Quacquarelli Symonds, which releases the annual World University Ranking.
To be included in the ranking each city must have a population of more than 250,000 people and have at least two QS ranked institutions.
Six Australian cities made it into the top 50 this year. Melbourne ranked the highest after moving up three places to knock London from second spot, while Sydney clung to fourth position and Perth fell eight rungs to 38.
There are 29 countries represented in the top 50 cities. Europe boasts 20 cities, North America 12, Asia 9, Oceania 7 and South America 2.
