A wholesaler with a non-local focus doesn’t sound like the ethos of the region at first, but for South West Fine Foods the concept works a treat.
The business’ goal is to bring new international foods to the doorstep of the community.
South West Fine Foods sources and imports products and provides a wholesale service to local businesses and individuals in the area.
Manager Rob Clayton said the new cash and carry service will enable wholesalers and the public to enjoy the use of their products following the opening of the warehouse last Friday.
He said the region was a “foodie bowl” and South West Fine Foods were ready to accommodate to the creative needs of locals.
Mr Clayton said he doesn’t view the business as in competition with anything else in the South West as he believes there is nothing else quite like it down here.
Their decision to open in the South West became a reality in mid September last year when they chose Vasse to be their new home.
“It’s a great spot, there’s a great community growing around here,” Mr Clayton said.
Mr Clayton said the 1950s immigration of Italians to Australia had a strong influence on their imports, with Mr Clayton and his business partners having more than 70 years combined experience in the industry.
This influence is still evident. Some of the most popular items sold through the wholesalers are peeled tomatoes, shredded cheese, olives and pizza flour.
The company has also extended into acquiring Asian ingredients, quality gluten free options, whatever the public may want to try.
“If we can source the product, we will; we’re always on the look out for new things,” Mr Clayton said.
“We love food, that’s what it’s all about.”
They’re also hoping to be able to import foreign beverages for the community to try in the future.
Ongoing tastings and spokespeople introducing new brands and ingredients to the public are also planned in the near future.
South West Fine Foods is open weekdays from 12 to 4pm and Saturdays from 10am to 2pm at Unit 3, 28 Burler Drive Vasse.
