Kanye West has explained why he doesn't smile in photos.
Speaking at The Daily Front Row's Fashion Los Angeles Awards, West told InTouch why he preferred the Victoria Beckham method when walking the red carpet.
"Back when I was working on Yeezus, I saw this book from the 1800s and it was velvet-covered with brass and everything," the 37-year-old said.
"I looked at all these people's photos and they look so real and their outfits were incredible and they weren't smiling and people, you know the paparazzi, always come up to me, 'Why you not smiling?' and I think, not smiling makes me smile … When you see paintings in an old castle, people are not smiling 'cause it just wouldn't look as cool."
You see? Not smiling makes him smile. It all makes sense.
To cut 'Ye some slack, he actually did wax lyrical on some important issues at the 2015 BET Honors on Saturday.
As he accepted the event's Visionary Award, West explained how people often questioned his relationship with Kim Kardashian on racial lines.
"At the barbershop ... I used to hear people always talking about, 'Man you know when an entertainer get on, of course you know he gon' go and get a white girl and blah blah blah and a white girl gon' get a rich black dude.' But I wanna say that my wife has dated broke black dudes. It got nothing to do with the money."
West then told the story of one of his wife's first interactions with racism, when her father was a lawyer in the OJ Simpson trial.
"Her father Robert Kardashian walked out, and on the side of his Bentley, they wrote, "N-gga Lover" Because Robert Kardashian was the genius that put together the defense team that got OJ off," he said.
"She had never seen her father curse or get mad. He was the most laid-back human being. And he went so crazy and tried to chase the people down. And she's sitting there crying and was like, 'Dad, why you going so crazy?' He said to her, 'One day, you may have a black child … a beautiful, beautiful, beautiful black child … and it's gonna be hard. You're gonna see how hard it is.'
"So true enough, we deal with racism because there are different races. Or the micro of it is that we focus on the different races as opposed to the macro, which is the human race."
West's comments follow a blog post written by Kardashian last year, in which she revealed that having a mixed-race child had made her more aware of racial discrimination.
"To be honest, before I had North, I never really gave racism or discrimination a lot of thought," Kardashian wrote.
"But recently, I've read and personally experienced some incidents that have sickened me and made me take notice. I realise that racism and discrimination are still alive, and just as hateful and deadly as they ever have been."
The BET Honors are presented by the Black Entertainment Television network to African-American high achievers in their industry.
The Visionary Award is West's 19th accolade from the BET network. He has previously won seven BET Awards for his music, as well as 11 BET Hip Hop Awards.
