CITY of Busselton councillor Terry Best has opposed the council's push to re-introduce ward-based systems.
The city is currently a district based system with Mayor Ian Stubbs elected by the council.
Cr Best said he was opposed to it because the current system allowed councillors to support one another.
“We make a determined effort to chip in where we can and support each other extremely well,” Cr Best said.
If the ward-based system is passed the city would be split into three boundaries with four councillors representing east Busselton, three councillors representing west Busselton and two councillors for Dunsborough, Yallingup and Eagle Bay.
Under the ward based system the community would have the opportunity to vote for a mayor in the October election this year.
This change would be made immediately so the election can be changed accordingly.
In 2013 the council decided to maintain district-wide representation with Mayor Ian Stubbs elected as council rather than the Mayor elected by the people.
The Shire of Busselton had a system of wards until 2007 when wards were abolished due to views of officers at the time and currently being that the councillors represent the interest of all electors, ratepayers and residents of the district.
City of Busselton deputy mayor Grant Henley said the current district representation was accurate and fair.
However, Mr Henley understood some members of the community preferred having a member from council.
“I think the perception in rural areas is they don’t have the representation they once had,” Mr Henley said.
