Most bands will do anything for publicity before the launch of their new album but San Cisco bass player Nick Gardner has really shot himself in the foot with his latest actions.
No, literally. He actually shot himself in the foot. Sure, bass players are often overlooked and underrated in bands, but still.
The Fremantle indie outfit star was in the South West town of Collie to help dispatch some vermin at a mate's farm recently when a car trip took a turn for the worse.
"As we were driving through an exceptionally rough paddock, I reached down to stop the gun from bouncing around and before I knew it, it had gone off," he said.
"The bolt had slid down and the jolting had triggered the gun... somewhat of a freak accident. "
"I realised I had been shot and ripped off my boot and sock to reveal a hole in my foot and blood everywhere."
His mate quickly dressed the wound and drove more than 100kilometres to seek treatment for Gardner at the nearest hospital. The bass player said he passed out.
At the hospital, he said he woke to the sound of yelling and realised he was in excruciating pain.
"The doctors got morphine into me and put me in an ambulance headed for a bigger hospital," Gardner said.
"I eventually made it to the Perth hospital where a specialist has done a great job putting my foot back together."
Gardner will miss the band's upcoming tour of the USA and Mexico, where the band will be spruiking their new album Gracetown – which was inspired by and named for a small seaside community in Western Australia.
The four-piece outfit's sophomore album is due to be released this Friday.
In the meantime, San Cisco is looking for a replacement bass player, though Gardner hoped to join the band later in Europe, when he isn't swallowing painkillers.
"However I know the band will do me proud and there will still be the same show, just without my embarrassing dancing," he said.
