Boxing Australia development coach Don Abnett says Jeff Fenech's three world titles brought a "massive increase" in boxers and he expected the "Fight of the Century" to have a similar flow-on effect.
BA chief executive Kable Kelleway is also looking at trying to turn people doing boxing-related fitness classes at gyms into competitors in the sport.
The AIS has been part of a push to increase Australia's medal haul at Olympic Games through combat sports such as boxing, having run draft camps to identify talent and establishing the combat centre as well.
More than 1000 businesses showed the "Fight of the Century", which saw Floyd Mayweather beat Manny Pacquiao for the welterweight world title in a unanimous points decision.
It was the second biggest pay-per-view event in Australia, behind the Danny Green-Anthony Mundine fight in 2006.
Boxing Australia has close links with Pacquiao's native Philippines - national coach Kevin Smith held a part-time role with their national set-up before he joined Australia's push for Olympic glory.
Abnett will take a group of young Aussie female boxers there in the coming weeks to help continue their development.
He was a young coach starting out when Fenech reached his peak and he said there was a massive surge of aspiring young boxers flooding into the gyms.
Abnett was expecting the same to happen following the Mayweather-Pacquiao fight, which packed pubs and clubs around Australia to see the biggest title fight in years.
"When Jeff Fenech was boxing there was a massive big increase in participation numbers ... I remember that as clear as anything because I was only a young up-and-coming coach at that time," he said.
"Everyone was trying to clone themselves around Jeff's style."
Kelleway agreed it would have a flow-on effect and said a similar thing happened when women's boxing became an Olympic sport.
He expected more males to take up boxing on the back of the Mayweather-Pacquiao fight.
Kelleway said BA was also looking to the Australia's packed gym classes to help find the stars of the future.
Every day there are classes where boxing skills are used to keep fit and Kelleway wants to tap into it.
He's just returned to Canberra from the Gold Coast, where Australia's current boxing cream were fighting for national titles.
Four Canberrans brought back medals - Amaeze Enyi won gold in the youth male 75-kilogram class and Tristan Eldridge also won gold in the under-15 57kg class, while Adriana Smith (elite female 51kg) and Ikenna Enyi (junior male 80kg) got silver.
Kelleway hopes there could be more national champs and potential Olympians in gyms around the country.
"We need to look at other avenues where people are participating [in boxing], but not actually competing," he said.
"We're not actually capturing those within out sport so we need to look at ways of how people who are in gyms doing boxing specific drills how we engage them into our community.
"There's a lot of them but we're not actually engaging with them at the moment."
