Reeve's Raves: "Bali boycott" keyboard warriors, do you actually care?

Last week two of the now infamous Bali 9 were executed after a prolonged and probably torturous wait for the inevitable, a moment in Australia’s history that may not quickly fade from memory.

And now there is a call to boycott Bali as retribution for these actions.

Okay, so where to for the next holiday?

Let’s go to Thailand, no wait, there have been numerous allegations of government corruption, and the heroin probably came from there too. Off the list.

Singapore or Malaysia, no, they executed ours a few years ago.

Vietnam. Nope, won’t forgive them for the war.

Germany or Japan?  Really?  1939 to 1945 anyone?

Middle East, Pakistan or India? Sorry, all that subjugation of women does not sit well.

South Africa? Yeah right.

USA then? No again, not until they stop the death penalty.

Maybe we should stay in Australia. No, sorry, that Tony Abbott bloke doesn’t like same sex marriage.

I know, it’s a holiday in Busso. Oh hang on, aren’t they getting rid of the Nautical Lady?

Bunbury then.  Sorry, no can do. This week I don’t like the development on Koombana North.

So you see, unless you are really, and I mean really concerned so much about the issue that you will write to Amnesty International or directly to the offending government, I will count you as one of the morally indignant keyboard warriors to post a few pithy lines on Facebook about the latest cause célèbre du jour, and then move straight onto the next big thing and pick up the next Air Asia special.

Here’s an idea, let’s boycott trying to smuggle 8 kilograms of death though a foreign country where everybody knows the consequences.

And let’s have headlines whereby “Bringing Our Boys Home” is about our soldiers and service people, not convicted drug smugglers.
