CAPE Naturaliste College student Ellecha Thorp is heading to WA’s parliament house to debate a bill on youth affairs later this year.
The 16 year old is taking part in the 20th WA YMCA Youth Parliament program designed to give young people an opportunity to engage in politics at Western Australia’s parliament house.
The group taking part in the program were given a days training and put into committees to develop a bill to be debated in July.
Ms Thorp was assigned the roles of youth member for Belmont and will also act as a member of the youth affairs committee.
Ms Thorp said politics was a career she would like to pursue and believes the experience would provide insight into what the job was really like.
“It would be nice to speak with Tony Abbot but he won’t be there,” she said.
“Even just the Premier about cuts to education because that has affected my school quite a lot even the music program I’m doing.”
Ms Thorp said the youth affairs committee developed a bill which would focus on bullying in schools.
“Instead of just working with the victim of the bully it would be with the bully as well they would get counselling,” she said.
“And give funding to schools to set up the program that we put in our bills.”
