AN EXCITED crew of Cornerstone Christian College students have started training hard in preparation for this year’s Pedal Prix race.
Race day begins for its second year in Busselton on August 9 at the foreshore.
The sport began in 1985 in Adelaide and has grown across the country with the aim to get children physically active while learning about engineering and team work.
Schools enrol teams to ride a human powered vehicle on a closed street track.
The vehicle is a three wheel recumbent racing trike which is built to specific guidelines.
Cornerstone Christian College woodwork teacher Peter Taylor said the students who entered last year had a lot of fun and were looking forward to this year’s race.
“We have learnt a lot from last year and have made a few adjustments to the design of our human powered vehicle,” Mr Taylor said.
The school received the body of their vehicle last year and built a red body around it.
Mr Taylor said the day was great for team work and healthy competition between local high schools.
“Last year we came before MacKillop Catholic College, so we hope to secure this position again,” he said.
The high school’s team is made up of eight year nine to ten students who volunteer their time to train and race on the day.
“The race goes for six hours and we aim to complete as many laps as we can, so training is very important,” Mr Taylor said.
