WITH a stripped-back set of songs from his long standing career, Pete Murray has his eyes firmly on the future, but plans to pay homage to the past on his upcoming tour to Dunsborough.
The Australian music industry veteran has spent the past two years working on a new album which will consume his future touring schedules.
Murray decided to commence his first stripped back, acoustic tour of Australia to “give back to the fans” with some of his most well known and loved tunes to make an appearance for the last time, at least for a while.
Murray said at these gigs people were welcome to call out with requests, the intention of the shows to be a community oriented event.
He said he was excited at the prospect of re-engaging with his old work, but the prospect of new tunes was just as captivating.
”We had so much success with the band,” he said.
The new album has a solid drum driven undertone to give “more groove and more flavour” according to Murray, finding the creation of something with structure and a sense of “jam” freedom still present a tricky endeavour.
“Getting something you like is the hardest part,” he said.
He said the acoustic tour felt just as well rounded in terms of sound in contrast to his usual big band sound.
“It’s so much more fun, easy to set up and travel with,” Murray said.
“With the band, you’ve got to stick to your set list.
“It’s less ‘on the fly’.”
The solo mentality will see Murray return to a few of his favourite metropolitan and regional venues around Australia, going to where he felt a good fan base deserved to hear the tunes they desired.
“Regional crowds have more engagement… they tend to be friendlier too,” he said.
“There are always a few wilder people in the crowd.”
Murray said he could feel his music engage across the generations, noticing a change in his audience with the introduction of more families coming along for the ride.
“It makes it interesting,” he said.
