SUPPORTING patients through their cancer journey has inspired a group of Busselton doctors to register a team for Relay For Life.
The annual Cancer Council fundraiser encourages the community to join in a 24 hour relay to celebrate, remember and fight back against the disease that claims the lives of 3,500 people in Western Australia each year.
Busselton GPs Ingrid Hanemaaijer and Gemma Hounslow have registered a team ‘Docs in Socks’ to become involved in next year’s event.
“I was asked if I would be interested in becoming involved by one of my patients who is on the event organising committee,” Mrs Hanemaaijer said.
“As a doctor, you have known people for a long time by the time they have a cancer diagnosis.
“You then become an important part of their battle as they go through the challenges that cancer brings.
“This is our way of doing something about it.”
The team are starting their fundraising efforts on Saturday with a garage sale at 23 Melaleuca Drive, Busselton with a number of clothing, furniture and children’s items up for grabs.
The Busselton Relay For Life will be held at Churchill Park on Saturday, April 2 and Sunday, April 3, 2016.
Highlights of the event include inviting cancer survivors and carers to walk the first lap of the relay and a touching candlelight ceremony dedicated to those who have passed on from cancer on the Saturday night.
Currently 100 participants are registered for the event from 18 teams with more than $16,000 raised.
