THE baby bandicoot that gained international attention after it snuggled up to some ducklings is still going well some 10 days after appearing.
Rex, who discovered the baby bandicoot that he now refers to as ‘Bandi’ when he was checking on his pet duck’s eggs on January 29 at his Bouvard property, said he was surprised the bandicoot was still there.
“The ducklings have moved out of the nest now but the bandicoot is still hanging around,” Rex said.
“They’re all [the bandicoot, ducklings and mother duck] still in the same area but don’t seem fazed by each other.”
Rex said he has now begun feeding the bandicoot after it started to look a little weak.
“I’ve been feeding it with an eye dropper,” he said.
Rex said Bandy now looked healthy and had grown quite a bit since first being photographed with the ducklings, who have also now doubled in size.
Rex has relatives who work for wild life rescue.
“I don’t know how long he will stay for,” Rex said.
“He might stay there another month – I’d be really surprised – but you never know.”
Since the story first appeared on the Mandurah Mail website it has gone on to be published in Germany, Japan and the United States among others.
