FISHABILITY is a WA charity which provides regular recreational fishing opportunities for children and adults living with disabilities.
Formerly Fishers with Disabilities Association, the group offer a robust events and activities program with opportunities for participants from grassroots level upwards while improving the health and wellbeing of their members.
Fishability works with the community to promote fishing activities as a means of acceptance and inclusion while developing self-confidence and growing social skills.
Formed in 2003 by the late Neville Thomas, the organisation has grown to be state wide under the leadership of the executive management board.
Now the organisation has expanded its programs into Busselton and secured local fisher Michelle Lee to oversee the operation.
Mrs Lee has years of recreational fishing experience having started Fishgirls Fishing Families in 2012 to cater for students with special needs with the reach of her program extending to more than 400 families.
The merge with Fishability will ensure a sustainable and regular weekly program of activities in the South West.
Fishability chief executive officer Di Bruce said the time was right to expand into the South West.
“We are looking forward to providing our programs to children and adults living with disabilities in Busselton with emphasis on participation and ability, rather than disability,” she said.
“With the modified equipment Fishability can offer our participants, it means that every person can enjoy the right to fish, regardless of age, disability or experience.
“The reward for our volunteers often far outweighs the outcomes of catching a fish because the feeling of enjoying the environment and putting back into the community is sublime.”
The Fishability program commenced in Busselton last month with fortnightly activities held at the Port Geographe Marina and weekly fishing lessons held at Barnard Park.
All activities are supported by Fishability volunteers and are delivered at no cost.
