Extreme temperature of 38 degrees in the shade did not deter the 16 teams that entered the championship mixed pairs event over the weekend at the Busselton Bowling Club.
Playing six games of 12 ends, some games taking two hours or more to complete, was very challenging with some wearing wet cloths and towels on their head and around their neck to keep cool.
After four games just two teams had won them all and the change of greens bought about their undoing in the last game, bringing six teams into the mix and changing the outcome.
Peter Hodgson and Lesley Smirk drove at the head on several occasions effectively killing the end requiring several extra ends to be played.
This resulted in them winning the event with 4 wins plus 50 shots.
In second place Gail Botting and Rolf Groenheide had 4 wins plus 32.
Undefeated until the last game captain Mick Stuart and partner Mabel Gallagher played a steady game to defeat Tom Walmsley and Liz Wilson with 4 plus 31 which gave them third place.
Similarly on B Green the previously undefeated team of Glen and Sylvia Tillotson went down, after some great bowls by both sides effectively losing their place in the winner’s circle giving Alan Gribble and Shirley Silverman fourth place on 4 wins plus 24.
