THE hot conditions did not deter a big roll up for Saturday tennis at the Busselton Club where Merri Belton and Bernie Adriaens took out the round three competition prize with a strong win over Ali Cunningham and Irene Harris 6-2.
In other matches, former singles champion Ben Priest partnered Gerald Garner for a close win over John McCallum and Dennis Kelly 6-5.
In the centre court challenge round, Brian Stewart and Alison Kirk defeated Tracy Adams and Guido Ghedina 7-2 while Garry Stokes and John Stewart had a close fought win over James McGregor and David Triffitt 7-5.
The Busselton Ladies League has hit off again with teams named in honour of club life members.
In round one, Team Peet’s Louise Braddock, Barbara Davis, Deanne Smith, Merryl Peet and Kathryn O’Connor defeated Team Basten’s Sandy Sigelski, Varley Tweddle, Lorraine Brown and Karen Stewart eight sets to four.
In the other division one tie Sanderson prevailed over Oates 7 sets to 5.
In division two Cameron beat Clayton 11 sets 87 games to 7-71.
Anita Revell won all six of her matches for Cameron and Louise Chandler five for Clayton.
The men’s handicap singles tournament will be played this Saturday under a new twilight format.
Preliminary rounds will be timed half-hour matches starting at 3.30pm followed by a final.
David Triffitt, Shane Weinman, James McGregor, Rob Preston and Andrew O’Neill are among the main contenders for the trophy.
The women’s event will be held the following week.
The Wednesday night session has started again with players welcome to join in for social sets from 7pm tonight.
Visitors and prospective new members are invited to the club’s open sessions on Wednesday from 9.30am and Saturdays from 1.30pm.
