AUSTRALIAN surfer Tyler Wright triumphed over current world number one Courtney Conlogue in the final of the 2016 Drug Aware Margaret River Pro.
Wright, who is currently sitting in world number two ranking posted two major scores in the first three minutes before Conlogue could even catch her first scoring wave.
Wright topped her own high scoring waves including a 9.70 barreling wave which had the crowd on their feet.
Defending champion Conlogue fought back and caught the second barreling wave of the heat posting an impressive 8.70.
The score was not enough as Wright took off on her second nine point ride of the heat.
“I am very sure how good Courtney is, especially in conditions like this, it’s her fortay,” Wright said.
“We can match power to power, if I am dropping nines I know Courtney will be dropping nines.
“I knew what I was doing and I knew what kind of waves I was looking for.
“Every wave here you take off and you are never 100 per cent so you just have to make the most of it.”
Wright had a strong start to the 2016 tour already, she won the Roxy Pro at Snapper Rocks in February and made the quarterfinals at Bells Beach.
“I don’t think I lack confidence in my ability, I’m coming into the stage where I’m working hard to do anything I can do to put the odds in my favour,” she said.
“Your instinct with the ocean, your boards and you, it is hard not to feel good and you can feel like you can’t fall off, it creates a really good environment where you want to put more into it.”
The victory sees Wright become the first Australian to claim the title at Surfers Point in the past six years of competition.
