A PENALTY late in the first half provided Bunbury Dynamos with a 1-0 victory over the Dunsborough Towners in their Premier League clash under trying weather conditions at the Dunsborough Playing Fields on Sunday.
There was little between the two despite Dynamos holding territorial advantage for long periods. The Towners were without three of their key players following an injury plagued encounter with Hay Park last Thursday night that sidelined captain and defender Stuart Turner, midfielder Scott Duncan and winger Dan Pickavance.
“We beat Hay Park 2-1 but their over-zealous approach in the tackle cost us dearly on Sunday,” said Dunsborough president Mark Gelmi.
There was little for the spectator to enthuse about on Sunday with the standard rarely rising above mediocre with both sides struggling to find meaningful opportunities. Both defences were comfortable in neutralising whatever danger the respective attacks could mount only for the Towners to give away a penalty that Kevin Ranson, Dynamos commanding central defender, tucked away in the 39th minute.
The Dunsborough defence were well served by Charlie Wilson with left back Phil Turtle once again being named the Eagle Bay Brewery man of the match edging out 16-year-old midfielder Luke Wright whose tenacity did much to break up Dynamos rhythm in midfield. The key to the Towners’ defence continues to be goalkeeper Chris Blackburn who was untroubled and in complete command of his area.
The Towners never got out of second gear and only awoke in the last 10 minutes with the introduction of 15-year-old Baxter Hutchinson. He was unlucky not to score in the 88th minute when his shot from the edge of the penalty area cannoned off the top left hand angle of the goal.
The Towners’ reserves lowered their colours in a 3-1 loss the Dynamos with Mitch Cantoni scoring from the penal spot for Dunsborough.
The Towners’ women continued on their winning way beating Dynamos 2-0 earlier in the day with Safyr Iriks, maintaining her scoring streak, along with Rosie Rowell.
