BUSSELTON resident Richard Ivey had a big idea to bring superboats to Busselton and race in Australia’s Offshore Superboat Championships.
The superboats race on the East Coast in different categories which range from 400,000 horsepower plus, Mr Ivey said they are like V8 supercars on water.
Mr Ivey spoke with the Offshore Superboat Championship’s president Paul Gibbs about bringing the event to Busselton and was told they had been trying to have the race in WA for the last five years.
The City of Busselton has given Mr Ivey $15,000 in funding and approval to hold the event in March but he still requires at least $40,000 to make it happen.
“When these guys come over they have their trucks fully equipped and a whole team comes with them from over East,” he said.
The Offshore Superboat corporation needs $55,000 in backing to hold the event in Busselton and Mr Ivey is hoping businesses or people in the region would like to adopt-a-boat to help make the event happen.
“Businesses can get behind a boat and there name will be associated with a boat over the whole weekend,” he said.
“If they do adopt a boat they will be able to go out for a ride, so there is a fair bit they can offer.”
The championships are broadcast on television in Australia and North America with an audience of one million people.
