While many people were donning beanies and thick coats across the Illawarra Saturday morning, keen surfers suited up in steamers to take advantage of the strong southerly swell.
Most beaches saw between two to three metres of swell, a three- to four-foot-rising swell with a six-foot swell at south-facing beaches.
The swell should drop slightly on Sunday and again on Monday before picking up again on Tuesday.
It comes after a chilly Friday night seeing the mercury drop to 5.4 degrees in Albion Park and 6 degrees in Kiama.
Meteorologist with Fairfax Media's Weatherzone Guy Dixon said that Sunday morning may be colder yet.
It’s expected to drop as low as 3 degrees in Kiama, 8 degrees for Wollongong and -1 in the Southern Highlands.
Meantime, Sydney awoke to a frigid Saturday morning, with temperatures dipping to a brisk 7.3 degrees in the CBD at 7:15am.
Further west and north, the mercury dropped to 2.4 degrees in Richmond, 3.3 degrees at Badgereys Creek and 3.6 degrees in Terrey Hills.
In the Blue Mountains, Katoomba residents saw a wintry start to the weekend, where the temperature fell to -2.9 degrees on Saturday morning to accompany Friday's settled snow.
