THE City of Busselton Council have pushed forward the date residents need their properties to meet standard bushfire mitigation measures.
City of Busselton Planning and Development director Paul Needham said landowners of all properties classified as residential, rural residential or commercial must complete their fire preventative works by November 16 each year instead of December 1.
“Council had recognised that as a consequence of our drier climate, fire-friendly conditions were being experienced earlier in the season, so it was appropriate for the community to be prepared earlier,” he said.
“There were no changes to the standards required, just to the date by which the work is to be done.”
Mr Needham said there were no changes proposed for rural category properties, as the fuels on these properties were usually managed through stock and harvesting practices.
Compliance dates for rural properties remain unchanged, with completion of firebreaks and fuel hazard reduction to be completed by December 15 and must be maintained until May 12, 2017.
