BUSSELTON residents were given lessons on how to share the road safely with trucks when the Australian Trucking Association’s Safety Truck rolled into town last weekend.
The award-winning mobile education centre made visits to the Busselton Men’s Shed, Cornerstone Christian College, Busselton High School, Dunsborough’s Emergency Services Expo and the Busselton Rotary Markets, spreading ‘Truckies Top Tips’ along the way.
Safety Truck driver and presenter Glen Schmidtke said more than 1900 Busselton and Dunsborough residents visited the truck during its trip.
“It is important that people realise that as a truck driver, even though we have got large windows, big mirrors and we sit up high, we cannot see everything around us,” Mr Schmidtke said.
“We have restrictions as a driver and they need to give us that space and be aware that they cannot cut in on us because we need the extra room to pull up.”
The Safety Truck driver asked people to be patient with truck drivers when they are maneuvering on the road.
“Because we are large, we do not maneuver quickly,” he said.
“If we do bump anything it will break because we are big and heavy, so we take our time when we are doing it, so patience is one of the most important things.”
The Safety Truck will now visit Bunbury before heading to Manjimup and Albany.
