FULL-BACK Phil Turtle underlined an outstanding personal season by being named the 2016 Premier fairest and best player for the Dunsborough Towners when the club held their end of season awards night at the Dunsborough Tavern last Saturday night.
In a season in which the Towners laid the foundations for a promising future, many players pushed Turtle for the ultimate prize proving that the club was worthy of a place in the Premier League having beaten all but one of the clubs in the competition.
Roy Arts was the overwhelming favourite for the Premier player’s player of the year rarely missing a training and willing to play wherever the coach selected him.
When presented with his award Arts commented that he “would run through a brick wall for the Towners”.
No Towners’ team did as much to raise the profile of the club than the women’s side filling a top four position when the competition was expanded to 17 clubs.
Belle Armstrong, who played a significant role in that success, was voted the women’s fairest and best player, with Grace Dickson judged the player’s player of the year, while Kate Dickson took out the coaches’ players award.
The reserves had a good season without winning any titles but the club wisely using this avenue to introduce many youngsters to senior football.
The success of this approach was mirrored with 15-year-old Baxter Hutchinson named the fairest and best, Alex Bettenay the player’s player, while Luke Wright picked up the coach’s award.
The club person of the year went unanimously to former English professional Chris Blackburn who was presented a Michelle original work of art for his dedication to the club, training and junior development.
The Dunsborough Towners club president said it was one of the best end of season functions they had arranged with Rebecca Tarrant in the Three Bears Tavern at the Dunsborough Tavern, a perfect place to have such an event.
