MOTORCYCLISTS donning dapper attire including suits, bow ties and cravats gathered at the Busselton Foreshore on September 25 for the start of Busselton’s inaugural Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride.
The Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride fundraiser celebrates the classic side of motorcycling while raising money for men’s health and suicide awareness.
It was founded in Australia five years ago and now runs across the world.
Busselton’s DGR organiser Suzanne Aston, who sought approval from DGR headquarters to host Busselton’s very first ride, said one of the key causes the ride supported this year was suicide prevention.
“It is a huge problem in Australia, so DGR is a really worthy cause and of course there is prostate cancer as well, which is quite a silent killer,” she said.
More than 20 riders, led by Ms Aston and her partner Jane, rode from the Busselton Jetty to Sugar Loaf Rock, along Eagle Bay Road and through to Meelup Beach before ending in Dunsborough.
“Many of the DGRs take place in cities – New York, Paris, London. How lucky are we that 20 minutes down the road you are just by the most fantastic coastal scenery,” Ms Aston said.
“We have got such beautiful countryside and some fantastic roads that take you through that so it was just really really easy to pick the route.”
On the road were classically styled motorcycles from across the world, including Italy, Japan, America, UK and Russia, with some as old as 80.
The group raised more than $1000 for prostate cancer research and suicide prevention.
