A ROUNDABOUT at the Yallingup Beach and Caves Road intersection is a step closer after land labelled Class A Reserve will likely be amended.
South West MP Barry House and Vasse MP Libby Mettam have advocated for a roundabout at the intersection for the purpose easing traffic congestion at the junction and improving safety.
Mr House said he was delighted by the move to seek parliamentary approval for the excision of land necessary for the intersection upgrade and looked forward to work beginning as soon as possible.
He said it would also allow for the Yallingup Hall and the old cricket pitch area to be united to form a Yallingup village atmosphere.
“I have a very strong personal, as well as professional, interest in this improvement,” he said.
“My Grandfather was one of a group of local men who hauled the original Yallingup Hall building with horse and dray in the 1920’s from Jarrahdene, near Karridale, to it’s current site.
“Generations of the House family, as well as many others, originally learnt our skills and played a lot of cricket on the old cricket oval as well as being involved in activities such as badminton, dances, community meetings, etc at the hall.
“In fact, when I was a young boy, my first paid job was emptying and burying the toilet pans at the hall before septic systems were installed.”
Ms Mettam said that the proposed amendment of the Class “A” Reserve in Yallingup was the next step towards a roundabout which would improve road safety for residents and visitors to the region.
The amendment to the land will allow Main Roads WA to widen and realign a portion of Caves Road which would enable the construction of a roundabout at the intersection of Yallingup Beach Road, she said.
“The changes to land tenure at Yallingup, would not only include the realignment of Caves Road to the east of the Yallingup Hall, but the cricket pitch would be transferred to the City of Busselton under a management order,” she said.
“The roundabout realignment at this intersection would address the long standing traffic congestion at this major junction which is busy on a daily basis but in particular when tourists flock to the South West in the summer months.”
The Minister for Lands is required, when dealing with amendments to Class ‘A’ reserves, to cause the proposal to be laid before each House of Parliament.
Once laid, if a notice of a resolution disallowing the proposal is not made with 14 sitting days, then the proposal may be implemented.
Ms Mettam said $70,000 had been allocated for project development and she would push for further funding from the new Minister for Transport Bill Marmion.
