IF you need an excuse to go fishing for a day here it is, the inaugural Gone Fishing Day is a nation-wide event celebrating fishing in the community.
Fisheries Minister Joe Francis announced as an added incentive for people to get involved that recreational fishers in WA would not require a licence on the day.
As an added concession, the annual West Coast bio region demersal finfish closure, due to start on Saturday October 15, would be delayed for 48 hours.
"With the recovery of key demersal species being on track, starting the closure two days later this year, would allow fishers to enjoy a day out on the water," he said.
In Busselton, Geographe Camping and Tackle World have teamed up with the Naturaliste Game and Sport Fishing Club to run the event.
Geographe Camping and Tackle World owner Nigel Hoffman said they hoped people who had not fished before register to experience the fun and excitement of fishing.
He said inexperienced people could hook up with an experienced fisherman and see what it was like to catch a dhufish or snapper.
The fishing comp starts at 6am on Sunday, October 16 and weigh-in takes place between 1pm and 2pm at the Naturaliste Game and Sport Fishing Club.
People can register at the Geographe Camping and Tackle World store or online at gonefishingday.org/#/ and be in the running for a multitude of prizes.
“Hopefully a lot of people take part it is going to be a fun day,” he said.
