Yallingup’s Jack Thomas and Margaret River’s Jamaica Selby have become Australian Junior Champions with victories in the Under 18 Boy’s and U16 Girl’s divisions at the Australian Junior Surfing Titles at Victoria’s Phillip Island.
The surf was pumping for the last day of competition with Flynns Reef providing perfect four to six foot surf for six individual national titles to be won.
Thomas clinched the prestigious victory by the slimmest of margins beating NSW’s Luke Wrice 15.25 points to 15 points in the hard fought final.
Thomas and Selby have now qualified to represent Team Australia at the ISA World Junior Championships which will be held at the famous beach breaks of Biarittz France during May 2017.
Yallingups Emma Cattlin won the girl’s under 19 division for WA alongside teammate Marnie Durant from Carnarvon.
The annual Yallingup Malibu Classic was held in some challenging and rough conditions last weekend but competitors made the most of the lefts and right-handers to carve out their names on the winner trophies.
Sunday saw some cleaner surf to be ripped into and it was the local riders taking advantage with their superior knowledge to dominate the finals.
Dunsborough’s Justin Redman once again showed his skills in the tricky conditions by taking out the main event of the Open Men’s division.
Dunsborough’s Brett Merrifield won the Over 50’s division while Barrie McKinnon took out the Over 55’s division.

New swell alert for Wednesday afternoon with a solid 3.5 metre groundswell filling in and the winds will turn South South East.
The large swell will hang around for Thursday morning at 3.3m and offshore East winds will make for perfect conditions.
Friday will have clean South Easterly winds but a smaller swell. South South Easterly winds and a fun 1.5m swell on the weekend.
