2016/17 Ladies and Men’s Handicap Doubles
SUNDAY, November 27 produced another beautiful tennis day for the Ladies and Men’s Handicap Doubles. There were 30 players competing for the club awards: 10 ladies (five drawn pairs) and 20 men (10 drawn pairs).
The ladies played a round robin with the pair with the most sets and games at the end of the day being the winners. Four pairs had close results and the winners weren’t decided until the exciting last round. Merryl Peet and Sue Blyth played Rosa McGillivray and Gracie Miller to decide if McGillivray and Miller or Megan Hemsley and Liz Morgan would have the most sets/games. In the end there was only one game to separate the winners from the runners-up. The 2016/17 Ladies Handicap Doubles was taken out by Gracie Miller and Rosa McGillivray with 28 games with Megan Hemsley and Liz Morgan finishing as runners up with 27 games.
In the Men’s Handicap Doubles two round robins of five pairs each were played. The results here were extremely close also. Colin Miller and Jay McDaniell were winners of group A (27 games) ahead of Tony Crolla and Guido Ghedina 25 games. Cliff Silke and Herman Dykstra won group B (24 games) from Doug Hutchison and Wayne Charsley (22 games). Cliff Silke and Herman Dykstra powered home to be winners over Colin Miller and Jay McDaniell in a 7-1 set, becoming the Men’s Handicap Doubles Champions for 2016/17.
