SIX swimmers from the Busselton Swimming Club have recently returned from the National School Sports Swimming Championships in Darwin. The swimmers, aged from 11 to 16, represented their schools at the championships which give the best school-aged swimmers from around the country a chance to compete, socialise and form friendships with other athletes.
Ross Rann, Indiana Williams and Maddison Johnston-Walker represented St Mary Mackillop College. Each of the three swimmers made it into at least one final and Rann finished as high as fourth in the backstroke events. Rann and Johnston-Walker were also identified for their performances and sportsmanship with Rann receiving the sportsmanship award and Johnston-Walker being invited to march in the closing ceremony.
Amy Kerr and Isabella Eibrink-Jansen represented Georgiana Molloy Anglican School. Again, both swimmers made it into at least one final. At 11 years old, Kerr was the only primary-school aged student from Busselton to attend the championships. Competing against the fastest swimmers in the country, Kerr finished in the top eight in the breaststroke and was rewarded for her sportsmanship with a place in interstate relay.
Ella Butler, swimming for Bunbury Cathedral Grammar School, also had an excellent meet recording personal best times in both the butterfly and breaststroke events.
All the swimmers recorded excellent times in hot, wet, outdoor conditions. The athletes were honoured to be selected in the WA School Sports State Swimming team and are looking forward to vying for selection again next year. The Busselton Swimming Club would like to thank everyone who supported the swimmers financially, including their major supporter The City of Busselton.
