A Busselton girls basketball team was allegedly kicked out a local competition for being too good then reinstated once lawyers became involved.
The team with players aged between 15 and 22 were playing in the Busselton Amateur Basketball Association A-grade division.
It was alleged a complaint was made to BABA that the team, which had members who played at elite levels, was too good for the competition and that this disadvantaged other teams.
“They knew right from nomination day who was in the team and who had played,” a parent said.
The women, who are still in school or working in part time jobs, had each paid $190 to play in the competition.
After it became apparent the team had been kicked out, a parent contacted the team’s club to have their fees reimbursed.
The parent was told BABA would have to reimburse the club and that the six games they had already played would be deducted from their fees.
“These kids work hard to pay their fees and there are parents who struggle to pay,” a parent said.
“It is the way they have been treated and it is not in their bylaws to be kicked out.”
According to a parent, options were given to the team to remain in the competition but they did not have enough players or would have been the only team in a new division.
“You can not just remove a side because they are too strong, otherwise every association would be removing sides. It is like an unfair dismissal.”
BABA was contacted for comment on the story but has not responded in time for deadline.
The team’s club declined to comment because lawyers were now involved.
