Meet Perth's first floating ice cream truck

Every Saturday and Sunday morning, Mr Shippy trawls up and down the river between Claisebrook and Guildford and sells soft serve ice-cream cones to any kayaker, swimmer or boatie he finds.

Geoff Shinner is the man behind Mr Shippy, and said the idea for a waterbound ice-cream pontoon seemed like a no-brainer.

"People don't quite believe it... there's nothing on the water like it - apparently it's a weird idea," he said.

Swimmers can either approach the boat, or Mr Shippy docks at the nearest available bank.

Soft serve cones, choc tops, sprinkles and nuts are all on offer.

"I have the same standard ice-cream machine that you'd find in a Mr Whippy van or anywhere that sells soft serve," he said.

But Mr Shinner said it hadn't all been easy.

"We've had a bunch of teething issues - this is our first real crack at it," he said.

"Serving ice cream on a moving platform is definitely difficult, with something as simple as the dipping chocolate, it's been hard to keep it in the container.

'We've tried rice pots, a plot with the lid nailed down... my dad comes out and helps me and he usually stands at the back of the boat.

"He usually ends up covered in chocolate."

Despite the initial hiccups, Mr Shippy had proven to be wildly popular amongst river-goers along the foreshore.

"I run it as often as I can... the feedback has been absolutely brilliant," he said.

"It ranges between 'what a great idea' to 'it's about time!'" he said.

Mr Shinner said it was his goal to expand the business further.

"I love the Swan River. You need to protect it environmentally but it still needs to be utilised," he said.

"We've just got our two year operating license by the Department of Parks and Wildlife... we'll continue to push down the Swan River."
