Cowaramup and Vasse Cricket Clubs went to battle in the inaugural Brad Hallyburton Cup on Saturday to raise money for the Cure Brain Cancer organisation.
The cup was named in honour of the past popular player Brad Hallyburton, who had batted for both clubs, and sadly lost his battle with brain cancer last year.
In front of a crowd which included Mr Hallyburton’s family and friends, the club’s B and C grade teams fought it out in a couple of entertaining matches.
Mr Hallyburton’s wife Deb, his parents, children and other family members were all present at the games as a carnival atmosphere spread throughout the grounds. There were marquees, a bouncy castle and a water slide to entertain the children on the day.
More than $3000 was raised through raffles, afternoon tea, auctions and a chocolate wheel for the Cure Brain Caner organisation which helps fund research into brain cancer.
In 2014, Mr Hallyburton was diagnosed with a glioblastoma multiforme brain tumour and was given up to 12 months to live.
He was on continuous chemotherapy and went through more than 31 courses of radiation but the tumour continued to grow.
In May last year, the Busselton community rallied around the Hallyburton family raising $30,000 within 24 hours to help purchase medication to treat Mr Hallyburton’s tumour after doctors advised they could not continue with radiation treatment.
On Saturday in the cup’s B grade cricket match to raise money for brain cancer research Vasse just lost to Cowaramup which finished 133 runs ahead of Vasse’s 132.
In the C grade competition Vasse toppled Cowaramup 190 runs to 176.
Both the Vasse and Cowaramup clubs would like to thank all of the businesses which contributed items for the day to raise money for a most worthy cause.
