Firefighters battled a blaze near Queanbeyan over the weekend following total fire bans on Friday. By Monday morning, just more than two hours away, there was snow.
"Summer is cancelled," declared Perisher Resort on Facebook. "Snow has arrived early across the resort."
The Snowy Mountains celebrated its first snowfall of 2017 overnight on Sunday with Perisher recording snow across its four resort areas.
Charlotte Pass Snow Resort also shared its delight at the snowfall and Thredbo praised the "summer surprise".
But don't get the skis out just yet. The light dusting of snow was not predicted to last long.
"Overnight and early this morning there's been a light dusting of snow, nothing really too significant," Weatherzone meteorologist Graeme Brittain said.
"Temperatures by Thursday over Perisher and parts of the Snowy Mountains look at 20 degrees maximum temperature ... so any snow that has fallen - as I said, there's been a light dusting - will not be there by the time we reach Thursday."
Just a week after a heat wave saw Canberra temperatures exceed 40 degrees, Monday was predicted to record the coolest temperature for the next seven days in the ACT.
The mercury will hit a maximum 23 degrees and dip to 5 degrees overnight.
The cool relief will not last long. By Thursday, the temperature was expected to reach 36 degrees.
"The high pressure system is moving across the region. That introduces dry conditions so there's no real rain in the forecast until the end of the working week in the ACT," Mr Brittain said.
"Towards the end of the working week and towards the weekend conditions are going to deteriorate again, so showers are in the forecast for the end of the week."
