WA longboarders were treated to epic conditions last Friday to Sunday at Yallingup mainbreak with a full mixture of large to small swells over three exciting days of competition in the state titles first round.
The Yallingup break is considered the spiritual home of longboarding and it showed its best form on Friday with solid three-metre swells rolling through all day.
Local Dunsborough rider Jack Medland impressed in the open men’s and logger divisions with two second place results which will hold him in a solid position to qualify for the Australian Titles which is being held in northern NSW in August.
In the open women’s division it was locals all the way with Yallingup’s Crystal Wallace dominating the two rounds, taking home first place ahead of fellow local Chelsea Bedford.
In the Under 18 junior girls Dunsborough surfer Chloe Wain impressed at her first event by winning the opening round however other cricket commitments stopped her from competing in the second round so she ended up second place overall and on track for the state team.
Local rider Karl Levy didn’t hold back in the over 35’s and over 40’s divisions which he carved his way to victory in both divisions using his intimate knowledge of the reef break. Dunsborough riders Barrie Mackinnon and Richard Wain pushed each other in the over 50’s division and placed second and third respectively while Mackinnon took out first place in the over 55’s while fellow Dunsborough surfer Bob Monkman won the over 65 division.
The second and final round of State Longboard Titles moves to Mandurah in June.

SE winds on Thursday and a rising 1.7 metre swell which should get above 2m by the afternoon.
Friday will see super clean E winds and a pumping 2m plus swell producing epic waves along the whole coast. Saturday brings ENE winds in the morning and a fading 2m swell whilst Sunday drops off to 1.4m and light S winds in the morning.
