Premier Colin Barnett has promised $40,000 for new and upgraded lighting at the South Mandurah Tennis Club if he is re-elected on March 11.
Mr Barnett visited the club on Friday with the Liberal Dawesville candidate Zak Kikrup to make the pledge and to take time from the election campaign for a game of tennis with club members, including juniors.
The club has 10 courts, but only four are under lights.
He said it was vital local sporting groups such as the South Mandurah Tennis Club have good facilities.
“Sporting clubs are often the lifeblood of communities and having quality facilities means they can serve their members well and also attract new participants,” Mr Barnett said.
“Providing lighting extends playing hours so tennis can be played in the evening when it is cooler during the hot summer months.”
Earlier in February Mr Barnett said a re-elected Liberal Government would spend $4.5 million over three years to install and upgrade lights across the state’s community sports facilities.
This funding would be in addition to $10 million already allocated to the Community Sport and Recreation Facilities Fund.
More than 1000 projects at sporting facilities had been funded through Community Sports and Recreation Facilities Fund grants, which added up to $169 million.
