Mandurah MP David Templeman has led a resurgent Labor party to massive swings across Peel, with early counting showing he would increase his margin by more than 11 per cent.
Not only did Mr Templeman post record gains in Mandurah, but Labor’s candidate in Murray Cowper’s seat of Murray-Wellington, Robyn Clarke, looks like defeating the renegade Liberal.
Ms Clarke recorded a massive 13.1 per cent swing on the two-party preferred vote, with Mr Cowper’s primary vote collapsing by more than 20 per cent on his 2013 result.
Although she leads with 51.1 per cent of the vote, Mr Cowper has not conceded defeat.
In Dawesville, a swing to Labor had Adam Woodage leading early in the count, but with more than 72.9 per cent of ballot papers counted, Liberal Zak Kirkup is leading with 51.6 per cent of the vote and looks to hold on against the statewide swing against defeated Premier Colin Barnett.
The seat was too close to call on Saturday night and neither party has claimed victory.
Premier-elect Mark McGowan will be sworn into office later in the week, with Mr Templeman hoping to serve as a minister in his cabinet.
The electoral commission will continue counting on Monday.
