THE Leeuwin League men’s Champion of Champions weekend has just been finalised.
Clubs within the League take turns in organising and running this prestigious event and this year the Augusta Bowling Club was the host.
The Dunsborough men’s singles champion represented his club well. Kevin Gibb lost his first game to Gary Smith of Cowaramup by just one shot on the first day.
This proved to be a battle royale between these two bowlers to take out the League Champion singles title as both players bowled extremely well on the second day.
The end result was that both lost one game and each ended up with nine points, but Gibb had nine more shots up than Smith and he took home the important Barry Blaikie Shield.
Over the past five years this shield has been won four times by Dunsborough champions and in receiving his trophy Gibb said he was “honoured to have his name join such esteemed bowlers”.
Dunsborough also achieved runners-up in the veterans, the pairs and the triples championship events and ended the weekend with 29 points.
However these were not enough points to become the League Champion Club and the club went down by two points to Margaret River and Augusta which were both on top of the ladder with 31 points each.
To finalise who was the winning club, the match committee had to go to games won and to great applause it was announced that Margaret River had beaten Augusta by two games.
