For the first time ever Gracetown sisters Bronte and Laura Macaulay will take each other on at the 2017 Margaret River Pro.
This year, Bronte qualified for a full time spot on the world tour and is the only surfer from WA represented after Taj Burrow’s retired last year.
Her older sister Laura won a wildcard spot in the event by defeating some of the best surfing talent in WA at the trials yesterday and will compete against reigning world champion in her opening heat.
Laura said it felt crazy to be competing against her sister at the pro and while it was in the back of her mind during the trail she did not want to get too excited.
“I was just trying to take it one heat at a time but now that that is happened I just feel really happy and so stoked to have that opportunity,” she said.
Bronte said it was unreal and the sisters had since primary school talked about competing in the Margaret River Pro together.
“We were like ‘imagine if we were both in it one day’. For it to actually happen is the coolest thing ever, we’re both so excited,” she said.
Yesterday the WSL announced it would move the location of the competition from Surfer’s Point in Prevelly to Northpoint in Gracetown preventing spectators and media from watching the action.
“Laura, she loves Northpoint, it’s like her favourite wave in the world. So maybe if they get a change to surf out there – I think she’d be amazing,” said Bronte.
“I love the way Laura surfs, I think she is really strong and I think she has the potential to do really good things in this event. I am excited to watch her and I will be her number one supporter.
“Go Lozzy. Take ‘em down.”
