The Drug Aware Margaret River Pro was in full swing last week with non-stop competition from the opening day until the Sunday.
There has been a mixture of conditions from the historic first heats at WA’s best wave, North Point, to the huge four-metre swells at Main Break and the free surf sessions at the notoriously heavy Box.
Margret River shredder Jacob Wilcox was the giant killer of the event and took down the 2014 World Champion Gabriel Medina from Brazil and backed it with a gallant defeat to the current world champ John John Florence.
“I just hope we get across the bay to surf at the Box,” Wilcox said, but it wasn’t to be.
Hawaii’s Florence has been on fire in the event and by far the favourite in the powerful surf whilst Owen Wright has also scored another high result which will add to his total season points and looks set to challenge Florence for a World Title in 2017.
Gracetown surfers Bronte and Laura Macauley also flew the flag for WA in the hotly contested women’s division with Laura joining her sister via the trials event. After a marathon of heats competitors were treated to some timeout this week. The best day of the forecast looks like Sunday which is the final day of the waiting period but it will be interesting to see what the ocean dishes up this week.
Forecast: Thursday will have strong SSE winds and a new 1.8m swell, Friday features cleaner SE winds and a smaller 1.5m swell whilst Saturday looks good with ESE winds and a building 1.9m swell. Sunday looks best with ENE winds and a 2.3m swell.
Hotspot: 3 Bears Sunday.
