When Margaret River resident Sue Barrett was in Queensland checking out the Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast she was introduced to the mother of former pro surfer Michael Peterson.
When Peterson’s mother found out Ms Barrett was from Margaret River she said, “Michael has sent you to me.”
“I want you to take his ashes and put them at Surfer’s Point, could you organise a paddle out?”
Ms Barrett agreed to the request and on her way back to WA, took Peterson’s ashes to all his favourite surf spots in Sydney.
Later this year, Ms Barrett will travel to the USA to try and get a movie produced about Peterson’s life and will undertake another project to produce her own surf film.
Over the last 12 years, Ms Barrett has spent time filming at remote surf locations throughout Australia.
“A person in the US told me they want to see it as we sound like the modern day Leyland sisters,” she said.
