Kelly Slater’s Outerknown clothing company has locked in the naming rights to the surfing world tours Fiji Pro over the next three years for both the men’s and women’s divisions.
The tiny island of Tavarua has one of the best left-handers in the world and is a favorite destination for travelling surfers but hasn’t had a major sponsor for years.
Eleven times World Champion and current competitor Slater, has won at Fiji four times and has a strong connection with the area.
“I fell in love with the small island of Tavarua a long time ago and I go back a few times every year. It’s definitely my favorite escape and may be home to the happiest people on earth,” he said.
The competition sponsorship further connects Slater into the World Surf League administration and his manager, Terry Hardy, is part owner of the WSL.
Slater has also sold his wave pool company to the WSL, and now he is an official sponsor as well as a competitor.
Some tour riders might be asking if Slater is the sponsor then will he be scored higher for his wave riding? Only time will tell, but all eyes will be on the judges and their scoring.
The Outerknown Fiji Pro women’s event kicks off from May 28.
