Construction of the new $1.86 billion Airport Central Station project is now underway.
The underground station is the first step towards the Forrestfield-Airport Link, a train line designed to provide an 18-minute journey for all Perth Airport users to the central business district.
Three new stations will also be built as part of the new rail link - Belmont Station, Airport Central Station and Forrestfield Station.
Premier Mark McGowan said the new train station was officially the first Metronet project to get underway.
"This important rail link was the number one priority of the Metronet vision," he said.
"With work now underway, this project will deliver a significant jobs boost for Western Australians and help improve connectivity across our suburbs."
Transport Minister Rita Saffioti said the Forrestfield-Airport Link was an important part of the government's transport plan.
"As well as creating 2000 jobs throughout the life of the project, the Forrestfield-Airport Link will revolutionise public transport in the eastern foothills, and provide choice for how many of us travel to and from Perth Airport," she said.
"The Forrestfield-Airport Link will provide affordable, efficient and quick access to the airport and eastern foothills - it will be a two-zone fare from the CBD."
The project is currently jointly funded between the State Government and the Federal Government.
"The $490 million Federal Government investment into the Forrestfield-Airport Link project is part of more than $1.2 billion in Federal GST top-up payments for Western Australia since April 2015," Federal Finance Minister Mathias Cormann said.
The tunnel-boring machine will break first ground in Forrestfield in late July, and will complete a two year journey to Bayswater.
The project is expected to be completed in late 2020.
