COUNTRYS Women’s Hockey Club finished off another successful season with all three teams making it to the grand finals for the fourth year in a row.
Each team finished as minor premiers and will battle it out in the grand final this weekend.
In the Year 9-12 competition, the girls played the semi final against a strong Capel team and narrowly lost this game 1 nil, placing Capel into the grand final and Countrys playing in the preliminary against Cavaliers Orange.
Cavaliers, also a formidable team, meant the Countrys girls had to bring their A-game and leave nothing on the field, which they did winning 2-1. Countrys now meet Capel in the grand final on Friday night.
This is the first year having Year 6 players in the revamped Year 6-8 competition. Countrys had a stellar undefeated seaon. They came up against a determined Wests team in the semi final and despite many scoring opportunities, could not covert. The final score was 2-1.
This put Countrys girls into the preliminary final against a strong Robins team. There were many opportunities to score for both teams with no result at half-time. Countrys finally put one in the net early into the second half and maintained a strong defence to win the game 1-0. Countrys will now meet Wests in the grand final on Saturday morning.
In the senior women’s competition, Countrys battled it out against Margaret River in the semi finals with an epic win to go straight through to the grand final.
Countrys were put under relentless defensive pressure in the first half with Margaret River scoring the first two goals and having real control. A penalty stroke and the score 3-0 at half-time, it looked like Countrys couldn’t come back from this. But after the break Countrys clawed their way back to level the scores 3-3 by the final whistle.
Some well placed penalty strokes and great goalkeeping saw Countrys come out victorious. Margaret River dispatched Capel in the preliminary final on the weekend to set up a rematch against Countrys in the grand final this Saturday afternoon.
It’s going to be a massive weekend for all of the teams involved with the grand finals; and spectators should prepare to see local hockey played at its best.
