It was time for the Busselton Swimming Club junior’s to shine at the Junior Short Course State Championships held at HBF Stadium in Perth on Saturday, September 23.

Coach Mac took a team of six young swimmers to Perth who managed 30 swims between them and achieved 70 per cent personal best times.

It was a huge effort from the young team given four of the six swimmers had qualified for state championships for the first time.

Up and coming champion, 12-year-old Rylee Williamson achieved three top-10 placings including a fifth place in the 200 metre breaststroke, her pet stroke.

Ten-year-old Spencer Drummond swam five personal best times from seven races, including a top-10 placing in the 200 metre freestyle.

First-time state qualifier, 10-year-old Sienna Currie qualified for four events including the 50 metre backstroke, 50 metre freestyle, 100 metre freestyle and 100 metre individual medley.

Currie performed well in all four events.

First-timers to the junior state championships were 10-year-old Jai Johnson who swam in the 50 metre backstroke and 100 metre individual melody.

Neve McDonald also competed in her first junior state championships competing in the 100 metre backstroke, 200 metre backstroke, 50 metre freestyle and 100 metre individual melody with some great personal best times.

A star performance came from eight-year-old Max Gray who achieved 100 per cent personal best times in all his races, and fifth placings in the 50 metre and 100 metre freestyle, the 100 metre backstroke and a bronze medal in the 50 metre backstroke.

After a short break for the club members, the team will be back in the water to begin training for the start of the long course season.

With the warmer months approaching training will also start for the open water series and the Busselton Jetty Swim.
