DUNSBOROUGH will be host to WA’s first shark-proof beach enclosure trial.
Premier Colin Barnett announced today that the government would provide the City of Busselton $165,370 to run the trial at Old Dunsborough beach.
The funding is allocated under Shark Hazard Mitigation Strategy to the test the suitability of beach enclosures in protecting swimmers from sharks.
“The state government recognises that a range of measures are needed to ensure that West Australians can enjoy our beautiful beaches. Funding research into shark deterrents is part of this strategy, as is the beach enclosure trial,” he said.
“It will extend approximately 100m from the shore and run parallel with the beach for approximately 300m.”
The Premier said the enclosure would operate as a barrier, rather than a shark netting system which aimed to trap and kill sharks.
