The union supporting staff at the Busselton Health Campus, United Voice, have slammed the working conditions for hospital staff.
The hospital has been plagued by building defects and maintenance work since it was officially opened in April 2015.
United Voice WA secretary Caroline Smith said significant parts of the hospital were shut down and their members had been asked to work at other hospitals.
“Staff have been effected by the working environment and catering staff are working in a food truck,” she said.
“The whole working situation at the Busselton Health Campus is really problematic.”
WA Country Health Service South West regional director Kerry Winsor said they were working with contractors to complete the remediation work.
She said the completion of the works in operating theatres was scheduled for mid-February and the remainder of works was expected to be completed around June.
“WACHS is working to ensure that the impact of the remediation works on staff is minimised,” she said.
“Some staff are delivering services from Margaret River Hospital during the theatre remediation works.”
Vasse MP Libby Mettam said through careful planning of the repair schedule, there had been no impact on bed numbers at the hospital, with 42 still available.
Ms Mettam said she was confident that the quality of care at Busselton Hospital remained unchanged, thanks to the dedication and commitment of health care staff.
“While ceiling works are underway in the hospital kitchen, a food safety accredited temporary kitchen is in place, with no change to food service or standards,” she said.
“Doric is a reputable and well-respected West Australian building company and will address the unforeseen defects in wall and ceiling panels at no cost to WA taxpayers.”
