THE Reserves and League team had byes but for the Under 18s Magpies team it was a tension-filled match versing the Blackwood Ravens who were the minor premiers last year.
Both teams showed grit and determination out on court, with the Magpies only leading by one goal by the end of the first quarter, 12-11.
Great mid-court flow from centre court players Phoebe Pethybridge, Imogen Milner and Hannah Taylor helped transition the ball through the court to shooters Sophie Brandis and Mia Pethybridge - who shot with amazing accuracy for the whole game.
Pressure from the defenders Ash Farmer, Sunny Manners and Shukia Riley in the second and third quarters was outstanding, with turnovers and rebounds boosting their score. The Magpies went into the final quarter leading 43-37 and the game was far from over.
The Magpies held their nerve as the scores evened in the fourth quarter.
Converting some much needed turnovers meant that after a nail-biting finish the Magpies deservedly won by four goals, the final score 60-56.
Mia Pethybridge got a special mention for her shooting accuracy and Imogen Milner won best player for the match sponsored by Stellar and the Chief in Margaret River.
There is a general bye for the long weekend with players competing in the 2017 Smarter than Smoking State Championships in Perth.
The next fixture of games will see the Magpies play at home at the Geographe Leisure Centre against the Bunbury Bulldogs on Sunday, June 11. League will play at 12pm while Reserves and 18’s will both play at 10.30am.
