In a match where both bottom of the ladder teams were playing for pride the Busselton Magpies came out on top at their home ground against the visiting side of Carey Park.
It was a nail biting start for the Magpies, the team only managed to kick one goal in the first quarter missing four attempts.
Carey Park took the ball straight into their forward 50 with ease and kicked their first goal in the first minute of the game.
After struggling to get the ball out of the midfield, Busselton were able to gain control with Sam Shepherd taking a mark in front of the goal posts but missed the home team’s third attempt at goal.
A free kick to Busselton saw the team kick their first goal for the game and take the lead by one point, but a strong Carey Park were determined to get in front.
The away side managed to get the ball back into their forward 50 and kick their second goal for the match taking the lead from Busselton once again.
Busselton were desperate to get on top but missed another shot at goal right before the siren at the end of the first quarter seeing the home team finish 1.4-10 behind Carey Park 3.2-20.
A determined home team came back strong in the second quarter showing they were a force to be reckoned with kicking their second goal of the game within minutes of the bounce down.
Four points behind Carey Park, the Magpies wanted a win and would stop at nothing to get ahead, but the home team missed an ambitious goal outside their forward 50.
Their strength and determination continued to pay off with Busselton taking control of the ball which allowed the team to get back inside their forward 50 and were rewarded with their third goal for the match.
Once again the Magpies were ahead of the visiting side by just one point, a missed mark inside their forward 50 would have given the team a comfortable lead.
Carey Park quickly tightened their defence and kept the ball out of Busselton’s forward line but the Panthers were unable to move the ball past the midfield.
A mistake by Busselton saw Carey Park get a free 50 but the visiting team did not convert their free pass making the scores level again. A lucky Busselton side tried hard to get the ball back inside their forward 50 but struggled to control the ball with Carey Park intercepting the marks.
At the back of their 50 Busselton landed a successful goal seeing the home team take a six-point lead.
After contesting the ball in the midfield, Carey Park’s determination paid off with a goal and evening up the score. Busselton fought back with strength and precision, Mitchell Lague missed an unfortunate shot at goal but it was enough for the home side to take the lead once again, by one point.
Carey Park stopped a goal from the Magpies and were able to convert the turnover into their fourth goal for the match. A vigilant Magpies team saw them rewarded with their fifth goal and a 13 point lead at half time.
The third quarter saw the Magpies shoot out in front kicking another four goals while Carey Park only managed two.
Busselton kept the pressure on Carey Park, with the visiting side struggling to dominate play seeing much of the game stay in the Magpies’ side.
A free kick inside their forward 50 saw Busselton kick a successful goal and take the lead by 20 points, Carey Park could not keep up and struggled to maintain control. The fourth quarter saw the Magpies continue with their goal streak kicking a whopping six before the final siren, giving the home team a much needed win.
The final score was the Magpies 15.18-108 doubling Carey Park which finished on 8.5-53.
For the last round before finals Busselton will take on the Bunbury Bulldogs.
