The Busselton community has until December 2 to get their donations in at Bunnings for Share the Dignity’s annual It’s in the Bag appeal.
Local ‘sheroes’ Trish and Kylie Robinson are leading the charge.
They urged locals to put together a donation to support South West women in need.
“There is actually a lot of homeliness down here that you just don’t see,” Trish said.
“It doesn't necessarily mean living in the streets, what about the people that have to move back in with family, or jump couch to couch or those trapped in abuse – some women are homeless within their own home.
“We want to help these women feel special and regain their confidence.”
Donations of new or near new handbags, filled with essential hygiene products, will be distributed to registered local charities for Christmas.
Luxury items such as socks, a hair brush, lip balm and magazines can be added for a special touch.
JSW Training and Community Services students undergoing the New Opportunities for Women scourse chose the It’s in the Bag appeal as their community project for the course.
The students made flyers and approached local businesses for donations to put in bags, which were donated by family friends and staff members.
According to Share the Dignity statistics, this Christmas there will be 85,000 women and teenage girls homeless, sleeping rough or taking refuge in shelters and 55 per cent of these women will be fleeing domestic abuse in their homes.
