The City of Busselton and the Busselton Tennis Club have formalised an agreement that will see the tennis club relocated to new premises approximately 500m east of its current location.

In what marks a historic moment for both parties the tennis club has surrendered the lease on the current clubhouse and will vacate the premises once the new facility is constructed.

The club also signed a lease agreement for the new facility scheduled for completion in October 2019.

The City of Busselton and the Busselton Tennis Club have entered into a funding agreement to construct a state-of-the-art clubhouse and playing courts.

This will see development of a regional level tennis centre on the foreshore.

The signing of these agreements enable the club to remain at its current location until the new facility has been constructed.

Busselton Tennis Club president Barry House said that formalisation of the relocation agreement was sad but also very exciting.

“Obviously it’s the end of an era as the club has been at the current site for around 100 years,” he said.

Mr House said the tennis club embraced the opportunity and aimed to build the best regional tennis centre in the country.

“With this new agreement signed, we’re cracking on with the work and just keen to get it done.”

City of Busselton mayor Grant Henley said the city was thankful to the tennis club for embracing the opportunity to develop a new facility on the foreshore.

“There have been some issues to sort through but we’ve worked together to achieve a mutually acceptable outcome,” he said.

Mr Henley said the lease agreements gave the club the green light to proceed with relocation planning as well as surety of lease during the construction period.
